Gortynia – an ancient city above the Vardar that still tells stories

Gortynia is an ancient city located at the Vardarski Rid site, in close proximity to Gevgelija. This important archaeological location represents one of the most valuable testimonies to the rich cultural and historical heritage of North Macedonia.

Situated in a strategic position along the Vardar River, Gortynia was an important urban, trade, and cultural center across different historical periods. Its location allowed it to be part of key routes connecting the north and the south, contributing to a dynamic way of life and continuous exchange of people, goods, and ideas.

The history of Gortynia reveals a continuity of settlement from the Iron Age through to the Roman period. The city reached its peak during the ancient Macedonian period, when it developed into a well-organized urban center with a clear structure, economic activity, and a distinct cultural identity.

Archaeological findings point to a rich and vibrant life. Finely crafted ceramic vessels, coins indicating active trade, as well as jewelry and everyday objects, all testify to a developed and functional society. These artifacts are not just remnants of the past, but evidence of an urban community with its own rules, economy, and culture.

Research shows that Gortynia was a well-organized city with streets, residential buildings, workshops, and economic zones. The presence of necropolises further indicates a developed social structure and established traditions. All of this confirms that Gortynia was not merely a settlement, but a true urban center of its time.

Today, Gortynia – through the Vardarski Rid site – is an attractive destination for those who want to experience history up close. A visit here is not just about seeing archaeological remains, but about walking through a space where life once flourished. At the same time, the landscape of the Vardar valley adds another dimension to the experience, blending culture with nature.

It is a place that fits easily into any journey through the region, yet leaves a lasting impression far beyond the visit itself.

If you are looking for stories from the past – Gortynia is the place to be.
If you want to feel history, not just see it – make a stop here.

Gortynia is not just an archaeological site.
It is a testament to a world that still lives beneath the surface.
